Subject: Re: [core administrators network forum] Stirling Ultralow Freezers
(-80s)
Hi Shawn,
At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center we have chosen the Stirling as the
standard -80 freezer on campus and we currently have 92 on campus. Overall we
are very satisfied with their performance and support when we've had issues.
They do currently have a door handle issue and are in the process of
redesigning the handle, however, they will only replace those that fail during
the warranty period.
There are several reasons beyond the energy savings that make these freezers
desirable for our campus which include: smaller footprint which allows
placement of 6 Stirlings freezers in the space occupied by 5 similar capacity
freezers from other manufacturers; 110v power option which can save about $800
for adding 208v outlet; and the lighter weight and smaller footprint make the
freezer easier for our facilities engineering staff to move around campus.
Feel free to contact me if you would like additional information,
Debbie

Subject: [core administrators network forum] Stirling Ultralow Freezers (-80s)
The stirling engine powered ultralow freezers seem to be something worth
looking into when buying new ultralows for storing samples. I have read some
studies about the use of these and wonder if anyone has any additional
experience they would like to share.
Here is a link to the manufacturers site
(http://www.stirlingultracold.com/ultra-low-freezers) as well as a brief write
up by Harvard
(http://green.harvard.edu/news/chemistry-building-operations-leads-way-freezer-energy-efficiency).
We have contacted Harvard for some preliminary information which is encouraging
but would like more.
Any help is appreciated.
Shawn
