Hi all,
We have an Orbitrap Exploris 480 on the Peak nitrogen generator sold to us
by Thermo. However, we’re hearing from other sources that the nitrogen
generator will not produce clean nitrogen more than a few months, and we
should be using compressed nitrogen tanks instead. So I have two questions:
1. Is your Orbi on tanks or a nitrogen generator?
2. If you are using a nitrogen generator, have you experienced any
problems due to dirty nitrogen?
Thanks!
Kristina Nelson

I have never heard anything like that. You do need to make sure the generators
are maintained - no oily compressed air and stuff like that - AND that there
are no sudden pressure changes (which can burst the membranes - I fear that is
what happened to the person you were talking to....) but other than that I
have always thought they we're quite nice (but if I am wrong I want to hear
about it now - so others please chime in).
You should check with PEAK of course (I think your rep is Kirk McKinney) and
they can help you. If you are using very high flow rates the quality will go
down though so you need to look at the table for your specific generator at the
flow rates you use.

Hi Kristina,
While I was at the MDAnderson Cancer Center we used boil-off LN2 tanks for
years. The gas quality is very good, but it is kind of a pain, they only
last at most 2-3 weeks, so you need to be able to accommodate two tanks to
enable a seamless switch-over when one runs out. Then we started using N2
generators for a while - there are usually set up to be oil-free, and have
a mechanism to strip out the water, but usually there is still some (1 - a
few %) oxygen left. For this purpose the residual O2 is not usually a
problem, but they are kind of noisy. Usually an annual PM was enough to
keep things going for a few years. Then we went to house N2 fed from a
large boil-off tank outside, and once in a while the tank was topped up by
a truck from the vendor. We put some filters inline, minimal maintenance
for us, and way easier! But I have no idea how much that costs, for a
small operation it might be too expensive.
Regards,
David Hawke, Ph.D.

David’s answer is great to me. Best lab I ever set up used a large outside tank
that a truck filled. No dewars to store, move, maintain, worry about emptying,
and no large amounts of dangerous cryogens stored inside in earthquake country.
But, a nitrogen generator is not bad solution either and not horrible to
maintain as long as you budget for it. Getting the house air compressor to a
high enough level to drive the generator can be a hassle in some facilities. I
ended up w slightly under ideal pressure system in some places. Dont love
sharing the air supply feeding the generator with every lab bench air valve in
the building.

I’ve always used nitrogen generators with no issue. If you have building
compressed air, PEAKS has a unit without compressor, nice and quiet.

We just installed an OE480 too. Thermo recommended a generator for the
FAIMS and ultra high purity tanks for the HCD
