Just asked if there is space in the ABRF2017 program for an IT session and looks like there is ... so ... what would should it be on? Right now we could organize a 60 min invited speaker slot or a 75 min round table session. If the topic lends itself to it, we could ask for 90 min with a 45 min where a person/people give short talks followed by 45 min for a round table discussion. In thinking about this, keep in mind that core facility people are there, directors, staff, administrators ... an if possible it would be great to pick a topic that cores from your "world" into theirs even just a little bit. What do you guys think? Interested?
Do you want IT content at ABRF 2017

Since IT can encompass so much and many disciplines, types of instruments, files, etc. How about a general hour on Best Practices that align with the RFI on Metadata: 1. Nomenclature best practices for naming files 2. Best practices on transmitting files to Investigators 3. Best Practices on transferring data files between end users for analysis (ex genomics to stats) 4. Best Practices for keep raw info with analyzed files. Just a start to the suggestion, I am sure others will have more to add. This all came up in a recent discussion with our Shared Facilities (cores) that face these challenges.

I think this is a good idea. Maybe about Public Access to Research Data?

Would this be in the IT world because IT needs to facilitate this? One thing I would like to hear about is how different cores handle data archiving. Flow cores often wrestle with this, because while we know the NIH guidelines, we have people who use core equipment but take the data away with them.

The objective is for this to come from people whose sole/major focus is on IT and how it supports biomedical research/cores ... A bonus would be for it to be appealing to other attendees as well so they have a better appreciation for the challenge those in IT face ... So what would the "IT-ers" here like? This is your chance to have content at the meeting. I really like the RFI on Metadata topic (NIH Request for Information on Metadata), but it may require coordination between an administrator and an IT person ... which is fine as long as meet the goal of providing content relevant to those in IT. This line of thought seems to have lost momentum. Does this mean that no one doing IT related things for cores / researchers want a session at the annual meeting focused on their needs? Or are you just enjoying your summer to much? Hope it is the later. Either way ... please tell me because people are vying for time at the meeting and I am 99% sure they are holding you guys a slot. Frances- Just my thoughts on this. I vote (and others please add your thoughts) to have a roundtable discussion on a topic that affects the cores in relation to IT issues, ex. Data management policies, managing software updated connected to third party instrumentation, providing security to data, managing LIMS, etc. Whatever the topic may be. I am not sure with this group being new there is enough traction to pull in a speaker but rather most would benefit from a good-hearty discussion on IT issues that affect core facilities. Any other thoughts on this?

I like data lifecycle management and policies as a topic. As a service and support provider I have to map the requirements of the cores for data lifecycle to underlying infrastructure and services that optimize budget, risk tolerance, performance characteristics, manageability etc at various stages. I am also interested in exploring the tension and gaps between 'traditional' institutional IT organizations/solutions and 'research IT' needs. These issues can be around security, agility/flexibility, cost/chargeback models, and central services such as storage or compute. I think the challenges vary by individual institution as well as type of institutions (e.g. big commercial, hospital, university). The NSF seems to be supporting approaches such as science DMZ (http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2016/nsf16567/nsf16567.htm) what institutions have initiatives for these solutions and a commitment to research computing support. How is that working for you? The closest thing to this discussion we've had at ABRF or chapter meetings have been Chris Dagdigian's talks and subsequent discussion. I believe his sessions were well received. Just a reference here for those that didn't see it: http://www.slideshare.net/chrisdag/bioit-for-core-facility-managers

I think the above ideas are great! I had one more to add to the mix: I saw an example of an institution making all data from "Seq" experiments, processed in their shared facilities, available to researchers via a searchable database. Researchers could search for specific gene names or types of tissues and see what type of data was returned. The returned data could be from hundreds of individual experiments. I found it to be a really great resource that helps share data across the institution. I was wondering if other institutions are doing something similar?
Wonderful. Let me see how much time they have set aside for you guy. We will need someone to chair the session and people to sit on the round table panel ... so give some thoughts to this in the mean time. F On Wed, Aug 10, 2016 at 5:10 PM, Elaine Schwendeman <email obscured>

I agree with Nicole on these topics of interest related to IT and cores.

Does this mean that no one doing IT related things for cores / researchers want a session at the annual meeting focused on their needs? Or are you just enjoying your summer to much? OK guys ... you have a 75 min time slot at ABRF 2017. I have asked what the general topics of the sessions running currently with yours are so you know if genomic people would have to choose between yours and a genomics one. In the mean time we (the group) need: -> A point person ... IMMEDIATELY ... -> To start crafting your session with respect to topic and format. To expedite this, I have summarized the topics (attached) you already tossed on the table (virtual). -> This to be a group effort / success Have fun. This is your opportunity to build your group at the annual meeting. Let me know what I can do to help.
Frances
If no one is interested in chairing a session, maybe this is NOT the year to bring core facility focused IT into the annual meeting and we should release the slot to other groups. This is an opportunity for you to continue build a network, but if you do not want it now ... then maybe another year. You came up with many relevant topics so I encourage you to capitalize on this opportunity. A network within ABRF needs to come from those who focus on the challenges of IT within the research setting. I am here to support you in any way I can. Please let me know how you want to proceed.
