I need to clarify a point in my previous reply. If you use file>import to open
the data file in excel there is a point in the wizard where you can select the
destination format. It is here that if you select e. g. text it will stay
unchanged from the source format.
However, if you just open or copy paste then excel will change a gene name such
as SEPT4 to a date and it cannot be undone as the underlying data for that cell
is changed to excel's numeric time data.
