I like data lifecycle management and policies as a topic. As a service and
support provider I have to map the requirements of the cores for data lifecycle
to underlying infrastructure and services that optimize budget, risk tolerance,
performance characteristics, manageability etc at various stages.
I am also interested in exploring the tension and gaps between 'traditional'
institutional IT organizations/solutions and 'research IT' needs. These issues
can be around security, agility/flexibility, cost/chargeback models, and
central services such as storage or compute. I think the challenges vary by
individual institution as well as type of institutions (e.g. big commercial,
hospital, university). The NSF seems to be supporting approaches such as
science DMZ (http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2016/nsf16567/nsf16567.htm) what
institutions have initiatives for these solutions and a commitment to research
computing support. How is that working for you?
The closest thing to this discussion we've had at ABRF or chapter meetings have
been Chris Dagdigian's talks and subsequent discussion. I believe his sessions
